Synopsis

Album Description
Following the critical success of Vol. 1, Raw Fusion Recordings is proud to present Vol. 2 in the "Inside Scandinavia" compilation series. This time around we have an even stronger line-up put together by Raw Fusion label boss Mad Mats, with loads of exclusive and unreleased tracks from the hottest and most in-demand Scandinavian artists and producers. As you have come to expect from Raw Fusion, the styles are diverse, ranging from cool jazz to sizzling latin, melodic nu soul, jazzy hip-hop, fierce funk and soulful house -- and yet, unified by a fresh feel that is distinctly Scandinavian. In recent years the nu jazz/nu soul scene has exploded in Scandinavia, with truly world-class artists and producers like Espen Horne, Povo, Teddy Rok, Up Hygh, Jukka Eskola, Bobby Hughes Combination, Freddie Cruger, Rasmus Faber, and SUMO emerging. Unfortunately, most of their music has only been available to DJs. In addition to the exclusives on the compilation, many of the tracks have only appeared previously on vinyl 12" singles. This series is an attempt to share some of these gems with a larger audience. Inside Scandinavia Vol. 2 delivers another rare glimpse of the best selection of what?s happening and what's to come in this exciting scene.

Scandinavia.... with Funk

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Raw Fusion is like a second ray of sunshine in Scandinavia. They've been releasing some damn good artists and releases in the past few years, thanks to guys like Mad Mats and the like. From A Bossa Eletrica to Povo and then som, this label's really pretty hot for it to come from a region of the world known for being so cold! This is the second editoin of the compilation series "Inside Scandinavia", which has definitely transformed my expectations on the type of music to expect off the label.

This cd starts out with a sweet broken beat by Espen Horne titled 'Colour Away'. I love this track - it's got soul to it and a trippy nostalgic feel to it. That's followed up nicely by Fertile Ground's "Another Day", given a jazzed up face-lift by Povo. Another stand-out track was one I first heard on "Freedom Jazz Dance" titled '"1974" by Jukka Eskola. Great keys and horns - perfect Raw Fusion/Schema mold of jazz. In fact, that was my highlight of Freedom Jazz Dance II. I also dug Povo's "Hi Fly", a track that's not on their feature CD or LP from a year or so ago (but is available on 12"). Great horns, pretty festive feel to the cut and some funk. Finally, I liked thesongs by Bobby Hughes Comination and Sumo's remix to A Bossa Eletrica's "Skindo LeLe".

I recommend this album - especially if you were a fan of the first "Inside Scandinavia" of two years ago. I wasn't as big a fan of some of the R&B cuts here (and I do like R&B), but I think the highlights were the more jazzed up and experimental tracks. But one thing's for sure - this album has a healthy dosage of funk and soul to it. If you like this, you'd probably also like Break & Bossa vol 7 and Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe vol 4."
