"This is part of what is currently a four volume series of funky, soulful tunes from the Atlantic and Warner "vaults." The series features an eclectic mix of album tracks, singles, and b-sides across several genres. The common denominator? A funky groove. Songs are heavy on the hammond organ jams, punchy horns, and funky bass lines. Volume 2 of the series mixes funk legends like the Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band, Young-Holt Unlimited and Black Heat with soulful jazz crossovers from Ella Fitzgerald, Freddy Hubbard, and Shirley Scott. 19 funky tracks in all, about half of which are instrumental. The first three discs in this series are great, and can be picked up in the Right On! box set, which comes in a nice book package, although with admittedly skimply liner notes given the format. A fourth disc is thrown in, but should not be confused with volume 4 of the series, which was recently released."
