Synopsis

Thirteen artists pay homage to the legacy of modern ska-punk forefathers Operation Ivy, the Berkeley, California quartet (1987-1989) that launched an army of imitators in later years. (Op Ivy's Matt Freeman and Tim "Lint" Armstrong continued their Clash worship by founding Rancid in the early 1990s.) While most of Take Warning remains faithful to Op Ivy's bratty, hard-nosed stylings, some pranksters (notably The Aquabats) take liberties and inject some of their own personality into the antic frenzy. --Mark Woodlief

Take warning..really!!!!

"this album is total crap.these bands are everything op.ivy wasn't.bands like reel big fish, cherry poppin daddies and long beach all stars(aka-the living members of sublime)are just exploiting a really good band.i'm surprised no doubt and smashmouth aren't on here.they like to exploit good bands.(no doubt i feel exploited madness to hell)this album isn't worth a penny.anything you pay for this some of it goes to the bands and a lot of bands on here are swiming in the cash as it is.this is not a tribute!!!!if it were there would be bands that respect op.ivy and what they stood for.the album should be renamed...take warning operation ivy, you're being exploited."
Very Impressive!

"Soon after I bought The Duran Duran Tribute Album (which I highly recommend) I bought the Operation Ivy Tribute Album. Most of the bands I knew little to nothing about, except for Home Grown. Home Grown's version of "Bombshell" is quick, slick, and perfect. Just like Op. Ivy would have sung it themselves. The track following "Bombshell," is Reel Big Fish's own version of "Unity." At one point, this was my favorite song on the album. My opinion has since changed, but once you hear this song you will be able to recognize why I felt this was the best song the album. Coming up right after that is "Big City" by a little known band called My Superhero. I was extremely impressed to say the least with this song! "Bankshot" starts off on a more humorous note with the producer pronouncing the name of the band, Pocket Lent, incorrectly. Moving on to "Sound System" performed by the one hit wonders Cherry Poppin' Daddies. This is a great song, it's just unfortunate that they were only one hit wonders. After that comes my absolute personal favorite track on the CD. "Smiling" by Teen Heroes is just a great rendition with the Teen Heroes' very own touch to it. I can't get enough of this song! The next above decent track on the album is "Freeze Up" by the Hippos. For some reason, I enjoy listening to this album over and over again. I think it's a great tribute album, and I would be humbled to have such multitalented bands perform my songs!"
Not worth covering

"When my friend bought this, I had to check it out. It made me cringe. Operation Ivy was a band so down to earth and authentic to roots the lead singer quit because they got 'too big.' If you're looking for great ska-punk just by the original album. It's mindblowing in poetic beauty, catchiness, and plain energy. Covering the whole thing over-produced and such ruins the whole feeling the original band had which made it so special."
