Trojan Dancehall Box Set
Stuart Jefferson | San Diego,Ca | 05/31/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Three discs. 57,56,59 min. each approximately. Good sound. Primarily made up of a style of music popular in the 1980's,this became known as dancehall music. This music relies primarily on it's rhythm, the vocals, while important, were not integral to the enjoyment of this style of music. Like other styles of Jamaican music, dancehall did not last long as digital rhythms were just around the corner. As all good reggae music goes this has a number of "versions". This is where the rhythm is used over again but in a different way. Older rhythms are recut and up-dated to sound fresh and new. This was something endemic to virtually all Jamaican music. Showcasing various styles of dancehall music and rhythms on the first two discs, the third disc is a "sampler" of Trojan's Dancehall Series that they released over the years. This does not lessen the music found here. This is good upbeat music you might hear in any dancehall in Jamaica in the late seventies. The artists range from Sugar Minott to Barrington Levy to Don Carlos and others of this era. All in all,a good bet for someone looking for a collection of dancehall music done up Jamaica "stylee"."
