Synopsis

Album Description
From the producers of recent lauded Brit-psych releases by Turquoise, Octopus, Tony Hazzard, Jawbone, The Knack, Graham Gouldman and Tuesday's Children comes this first-time archival collection of lost masters, demos and acetates from the late '60s; the first in a series if we have things our way. Features such luminaries as Tintern Abbey, Rupert's People, Honeybus and The Majority. Curated by Stefan Granados and Andy Morten - you know it makes sense! Beautifully restored from a bewildering selection of acetates, tapes and wax discs and dazzlingly packaged in the tried and true Rev-Ola fashion! A must for all fans of British pop, psych, freakbeat, blue-eyed soul and general weird 'n' wonderful archival recordings from the original psychedelic era! Rev-Ola. 2007.

Enjoyable trip back in time

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I'll get this first point out of the way quickly, As stated in the introduction in the booklet, "Psychedelic Jumble is not always a hi-fi listening experience, given that all but one of these tracks were rescued from well worn acetates or crumbling tapes.." I just thought I'd get that point across because it completely never occurred to me before buying that some of the tracks are very well comparable to the previews in quality.

So now for the material. There is a nice variety of songs compiled here and it is a very good idea because there must be so many recordings that have been lost over time and never heard, and some of them are real gems!

Now I'm not well informed of much of the more obscure 60's bands, I'm only familiar with the mainstream ones, but in my opinion, many of the songs don't quite harness the "psychedelic" vibe I was initially expecting. A lot of them have quite a kinks style about them, musically and maybe lyrically (in some certain parts.) For me the psychedelia kicked in around halfway with "Time Machine man," then ebbed back down and resumed again with "You and Me Baby" for the rest of the cd. They don't claim it to be a collection of psychedelic songs but "recordings from the original psychedelic era" but I'd like to share my thoughts on that with anyone else who might be expecting the same as I.

With all that said, it is a very nice collection of songs, and as far as I was able to determine, most are quite difficult to find anywhere else (I'd be especially interested in tracking down more Obscured Rays material.) As I stated earlier, I am no expert in 60's bands but I felt that I should express some of my thoughts to potentially assist anyone else considering this purchase!"
