"Vaughn Monroe could really sing; I hear him sing I always sit down and take my time to listen while he handles any ballad to make it sound fresh and new. Vaughan possessed great talent to say the least; and this endeared him to his fans. The quality of the sound on the three CDs in this box set is excellent and I like that artwork even if it is somewhat standard for this CD series.
The first CD begins with "Blue Moon." Vaughn tackles this with all his might and the results are wonderful--he never sounded better. I really like the classic "Shine On Harvest Moon;" Vaughn's voice was made to sing ballads like this and he puts most other singers to shame with his excellent treatment of this ballad! Al Jolson would have been proud; and the backup singers harmonize faultlessly as well. "The Kiss In The Dark" has a fine musical arrangement and the strings are so very sweet; Vaughn bats this straight out of the ballpark and his deep voice never falters. "Meet Me Tonight In Dreamland" has Vaughn in his natural element; he croons this so well I think Bing Crosby might have been just a little bit jealous! The music sounds great on "Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland" but wisely the musicians never steal the spotlight from Vaughn Monroe--he remains front and center which is precisely where he always belonged!
"The Things We Did Last Summer" has some backup singers harmonizing on some of the lyrics with Vaughn; and this creates a very beautiful version of this ballad. "Look For The Silver Lining" gets the royal treatment from Vaughn Monroe; he never sings a superfluous note and it's really a fine rendition of this tune. "Let's Get Lost" glistens like silver and gold; Vaughn Monroe and the others handle this perfectly. "It's Only A Paper Moon" has some wonderful music to accompany Vaughn as he sings this very well; and "Dream" really impresses me--it's all THAT good. "Dream" is easily a major highlight of this three CD set. "I'll See You In My Dreams" continues with some mighty fine music; and listen for "Who?" "Who?" gets a very spirited treatment from Vaughn, the backup singers and those superb musicians who play so well.
"My Dreams Are Getting Better All The Time" has Vaughn Monroe singing particularly well; this upbeat tune is catchy and that's grand. "When the Lights Go On Again" was a very popular song during World War II; many people hoped that the "lights would go on again" when the Axis powers were defeated. "Red Roses For A Blue Lady" charms me with its natural beauty; and Vaughn Monroe makes this an excellent highlight of this CD set. Of course, "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" is sublime in Vaughn's capable hands; he croons this to perfection--and beyond! I also like "The Last Time I Saw Paris;" this classic pop vocal gets the royal treatment and that big band style arrangement enhances the number even more. "Shall We Dance" never sounded better; and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" sparkles brighter than gold when Vaughn Monroe massages the lyrics to this classic love song. "Begin The Beguine" is also very well done; and the last CD ends strong with Vaughn Monroe performing "There! I've Said It Again."
Vaughn Monroe fans will consider this three CD set to be a "must-have" for their collections. It's a strong retrospective of Vaughn's artistry; and people who appreciate classic pop vocals performed in very good taste will want this box set as well.

"This is a wonderful 3 CD set. Monroe's baritone voice is spectacular. Anyone who appreciates lovely words and beautiful orchestra music from the 40's and 50's will be delighted with this threesome. His duets with women vocalists are just awesome. Unlike a lot of music today, you can hear and understand all of the lyrics. Just plain wonderful."
