CD Reviews

Good collection of contemporary songs of that era
07/08/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Like its predecesseor, "1943", these are a collection of songs recorded in a New York studio and not released under Vaughn's traditional RCA Victor label. There are several selections reflecting the times, the war and its consequences for America. Especially poignant is Vaughn's redition of "Don't Worry Mom" and his orchstra provides fine backing as well. I especially like his treatment of "This Heart of Mine" which is sung in an understated and yet romantic manner. Also included is "Lili Marlene" which was a mild hit for Monroe and a favorite of troops - U.S. and German during WWII. Great nostalgia with a neat blance of ballads and swing."

"A companion to the 1943 Circle release, this CD contains more Lang-Worth transcriptions. This one swings even more than the first, with greater emphasis on the band. "Candy Kid Digs In" and "Candy Kid Takes the Count" are excellent, as is "Happy Jack". My favorite is "Notes from a Classy Chassis", which I have on an old LP under the title "Serenade to a Classy Chassis". Of course, there are Monroe vocals, as well as a couple vocals by Marilyn Duke, but it is the instrumentals which make this release really shine."
