"I have had the privilege of listening to music by the Velvets, particularly Virgil Johnson, on one of our local oldies stations through the years so was delighted to find a quality remaster of their music. A side note--Virgil Johnson recently retired as a high school educator and is currently a dejay on a local oldies station. This is a great addition to your collection if you enjoy this type of music!!"

A Roy Orbison Discovery

"This R&B doo-wop Texas quintet [lead Virgil Johnson, baritone Will Solomon, bass Mark Prince, and tenors Bob Thursby and Clarence Rigby] were steered to Monument Records by the great Roy Orbison, and in June 1961 they took Tonight (Could Be The Night) to # 26 Billboard Hot 100 b/w Spring Fever.



However, a red flag should have gone up when that tune failed to dent the Top 100 on the R&B charts, an ominous sign for a R&B group. A few months later, not even a tune penned by Orbison, Laugh [b/w Lana], could get them any higher than # 90 Billboard Hot 100 and again nowhere on the R&B charts, a fate shared by all their other singles.



That lack of success couldn't be blamed on the small label curse as Monument certainly had the resources to properly promote a record. Perhaps, instead, it had something to do with the arrangements as in, for example, their up-tempo rendition of the Orioles' classic, Crying In The Chapel. To many The Velvets' rendition would border on blasphemy.



So why am I giving it 4 stars? Because this is one instance where the phrase "very best of" is met by Collectables, as all four sides of their two charted hits are here."
