CD ReviewsHmmm...... Okay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 08/29/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "I have to say, when I first heard this album, it wasn't what I expected to hear from the classic Ventures I was used to and liked better, but after I gave it a chance and listened to it, I really liked it. The first album was great, however, I couldn't handle the wierdness of all the steel drums and timbales on Latin Album. Also origanal and my faVORITE DRUMMER , Mel Taylor is not on Latin Album. Latin Album was in 1977, Mel left in 72, Joy is from 1979. The harpischord in Joy is great. Even though I like the old/classic Ventures better, I can take listening to this album on a regular basis. It's refressing." The Ventures are having fun crossing musical borders! 02/12/1999 (4 out of 5 stars) "This CD is another example of the Ventures having fun crossing musical borders and genres. The "Joy" album, released almost 30 years ago, (tracks #1-12) performs some of classical's greatest hits. I almost think that this album was an early inspiration for the "Mannheim Steamroller". You must listen to "Joy", "Beethoven's Sonata in C# minor," "Un Bel Di", and "Mozart's 40th, 1st Movement". The "Latin Album" is done with taste. The album is an easy listening, with a "Love Boat" disco feel. I personally would have liked to have heard it remixed eliminating the 70's analog strings for some sampled patches." It's just impossible. Johnny Heering | Bethel, CT United States | 05/10/2006 (3 out of 5 stars) "This CD features two Ventures albums from the 1970s.
Joy was released in 1972 to cash in on the brief popularity of "pop" versions of classical instrumentals in the early '70s. The title song had been a smash hit for Apollo 100 a few months before this album came out. The Ventures, always ones to cover the latest instrumental hit, copied it and filled out the album with their versions of other classical instrumentals. It's an okay album, but it's not one of their best. The Latin Album was released in 1979 in Japan only. In the late '70s, there was a resurgence of popularity for "Latin" music in Japan, so the Ventures attempted to cash in on it. It's a good album, spotlighting the group's mellower side. This Cd may disappoint people looking for the rocking side of the Ventures, but if you want to hear their softer side, you may enjoy it." |
