"The Best of Vera Lynn has marvelous songs performed by Vera Lynn, one of the best songbirds of the twentieth century. Vera Lynn is somewhat underrated and unjustly forgotten. Her voice was as clear as a bell and she brought happiness to countless numbers of people with her beautiful singing. The quality of the sound is excellent and I like the artwork as well.
The CD starts very strong with Vera Lynn performing "White Cliffs Of Dover;" this World War II era song charmed millions and it represented their hopes that the Allied forces would win so that their sons and daughters could be with them once again. Vera sings this with panache and her excellent sense of timing increases her singing all the more--I love it! "Forget-Me-Not" is a very lush ballad with that music and the men's chorus to backup Vera--not that she really needed backup but they do sound pretty good. "Forget-Me-Not" is easy on the ear and the strings are used to great advantage.
"Homecoming Waltz" is beautiful when Vera Lynn and the chorus perform it; Vera never sounded better and just one listen proves just how much talent she truly had! Vera delivers this with panache and I'm impressed. "Auf Wiederseh'n, Sweetheart" features Vera squarely front and center as she sings this faultlessly--and front and center is certainly right where she belonged and always will belong! "Who Are We" gets a passionate delivery from Vera; and listen for Vera to do a great job on "House With Love In It." Vera uses this number as an opportunity to really open up and use a good deal of her vocal range--great!
"You Can't Be True Dear" has a lovely big band arrangement that fits in perfectly with Vera's vocals; this truly is an outstanding number on this album and I think you'll like it if you haven't heard it before. "Again" is also very pretty; and "If You Love Me (Really Love Me)" sounds so good that maybe even Edith Piaf herself would be a just little bit jealous! Vera Lynn's rendition of "If You Love Me (Really Love Me)" stuns me and it's a major highlight of this CD.
"Be Anything (But Be Mine)" has a terrific arrangement and Vera aces this effortlessly; and there's yet another gem in "Anniversary Waltz." "Anniversary Waltz" is very sweet and Vera never lets go of a superfluous note, either! "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" is a huge classic that Vera injects with genuine heart and soul; and she does a magnificent rendition of "As Time Goes By" from the movie "Casablanca." The CD ends very strong with "We'll Meet Again;" this romantic tune leaves me wanting more.
Vera Lynn had talent; this CD barely scratches the surface of what she could do. I highly recommend this for her fans; and it also makes a fine place to start for people just discovering Vera's artistry.
