"As it is a live recording from Vienna in 1973, there are obvious sonic drawbacks. Nevertheless, don't let this deter you from getting this set as it's quite a good performance. Muti conducts with verve and strength although the Vienna Philharmonic gives an average performance. Domingo is a heroic Radames and while he may not be very subtle in his vocalism, his voice remains fresh and secure throughout and his portrayal is convincing. However, the biggest surprise of the set is Gwyneth Jones's Aida. Frankly, I initially approached this set with trepidation as Jones is a rather erratic singer and her voice can be afflicted with wobble. However, although her voice may be larger than what Aida needs, she's vocally secure and is more than able to meet the roles many demands. Such is her vocal technique that she's here able to ascend the treacherous exposed passage in the Nile Aria with consummate ease and stylish phrasing and cap it with a sustained pianissimo High C. I wonder if many sopranos can manage that in a live performance! It's quite a revelation to detractors of this singer. Viorica Cortez is a fine Amneris but Eugene Holmes is a faceless Amonasro. On the whole, I consider this a historical document well worth investing in."

Great live Aida

"I didn't realise that Gwyneth Jones can be so effective in an Italian role! Her portrayal of Aida is exceedingly fine with some great (and steady) singing. Domingo's Radames is, of course, a known quality and he is in good and youthful voice here. The supporting cast is very fine. Don't miss this precious release."
