CD Reviews

Mixed cast

(4 out of 5 stars)

"A live recording from the old opera house in Amsterdam, but for a house with dry acoustics the sound quality is quite good. The reason for this issue must solely have been Cristina Deutekom in the role of Leonora. The rest of the cast includes the young Spanish tenor Juan Lloveras as Manrico. His singing is pleasurable in the middle and low voice if you can overlook the occasional slurring to the notes, but the voice is strained at the top. Not really what you are looking for in a Manrico. "Di quella pira" was transposed half a tone down.Dutch baritone Jan Derksen as Il Conte di Luna gives the role all the dramatic tension and impetus it needs and has a wonderful Verdi baritone without breaks or difficulties in any region of the voice, although the extreme opening of the vowels to accommodate the tessitura can get on the nerves.American mezzo Carolyne James is quite horrendous. She bashes the voice from the first note she sings, shrieking at the top and pushing at the bottom. It actually got to the point where I just had to fast forward whenever she sang. The smaller roles are all adequately sung by the ensemble singers of the house and in the case of Ruiz there is even a luxury casting in the person of Adriaan van Limpt. So far an OK recording. Which brings us to Cristina Deutekom. This recording catches her in spectacular voice. After some flat notes in her first aria (which she seems to use as a warm up) she flies off into the cabaletta and never come back down to earth. She gives the role drama, depth, soaring top notes, floating pianissimi... well, everything it needs. To my taste she is the only dramatic coloratura who has any business singing this role, because she is the only one able to give full dramatic power (Miserere!) without ruining the voice for the piani, coloratura, fil di voce etc. Their are many singing canaries within this voice type, Cristina Deutekom is not one of them.Christopher Keenes conducting is secure though not very enlightened. Enough to buy this CD? Deutekom is."
Only 3 minutes interesting

"Bad singers (except maybe Luna ; the worst being Manrico). Bad conductor. The only interest : the additional three minutes of the finale, more dramatic.

--------
