This is a thoroughly idiomatic, exciting performance of Trovatore, recorded in 1930. Conductor Lorenzo Molajoli and the Scala forces have the score totally in hand and deliver Verdi's music in a manner that would thrill audiences and would probably please the master himself. Bianca Scacciati, as Leonora, is extroverted and stylistically and rhythmically right; Francesco Merli, the Manrico, is a master of sweet singing and also has the oomph for "Di quella pira" and the other "big" moments. Giuseppina Zinetti, as mama Azucena, is nice and chesty, and Enrica Molinari's di Luna is gorgeous Verdi singing. The bonus tracks are good: a wonderful Lombardi trio; a nice, rarely heard duet from Marchetti's Ruy Blas; and some thrilling moments from Catalani's Loreley. --Robert Levine

Excitement! Perfection! Authentic Verdi!

"This Trovatore is very Verdi! Quick, dramatic, heavily accented, and muscular. Molinari is the most beautiful Verdi baritone I have heard on record. When I ran across the voice of Molinari, I understood that I was witnessing an authentic experience of a Verdian; that rare understanding that even good Verdi singers do not possess. Molinari is in a league with the greatest Verdians and I mean that top three or so in the discography. In one respect he surpasses them all.As a Verdian, the other singers don't match him, but they succeed boundlessly because they have il sacro fuoco; passion, unrestrained generosity, and exuberance! Bianca Scaciatti is marvelous! She is the most passionate Leonora on disc and correct musically. Her voice has a distinctively acidic beauty. Merli is in a class alone! The comprimari are better than any other presentation. Ah! La Zinetti! After I got over the whiny and degenerative quality of her attack, THIS WOMAN SPELLBOUND ME! No Azucena ever made me cry. Zinetti did!The sound is surprisingly excellent. Molajoli the conductor is flawless! A great buy!"
