CD ReviewsClassic Hard Country John R. Jones Jr. | United States | 12/09/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "Hats off to the American Harvest Recording Society for bringing Vern's classic early '80's recordings to CD - the sound is crystal clear, the music is top notch "real" country, and there is even a bonus track that was recorded for the original 1984 release but for some reason, was never included on the album. In spite of a title that could lead some uninitiated listeners to misconstrue this as a seasonal release (it is not), this recording stands as a strong member of what could arguably called Vern's first classic trilogy, with "Time Stood Still" and "If You're Gonna Do Me Wrong (Do it Right)" - (the other, later trilogy being "Chisled in Stone", "Alone" and "Out Of My Heart"). On this recording, agumented with such stellar guests as Roger McGuinn and Emmylou Harris, Gosdin demonstrates track after track why he was dubbed "The Voice" - his is a powerfully honest and emotionally charged delivery that epitimizes the devastating truth rendered by good country music. Contains the number one hit "I Can Tell By the Way You Dance (You're Gonna Love Me Tonight)" and other classic tunes, there are no weak tracks here. Vern is just as good as George Jones and just as underappreciated as Gene Watson - this recording will not disappoint if it is hard classic country music you are seeking." The Great Vern Gosdin Jerry L. Blalock | 06/21/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "Vern never got his due as one of the greatest country artists EVER.
Don't believe me? Even tho all the songs on this cd are great, the price you pay is worth it for the song "Dead From The Heart On Down". Listen to it and see if you don't agree it is one of THE best country (I'm talking steel guitars and sad, breaking voices) songs of all time..can compete with Jones "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Thanks Vern for all your great recordings." |
