Synopsis

Album Description
Following up her critically-lauded Tragediennes album (winner of Gramophone and Echo Kassik Awards), French soprano Veronique Gens has recorded a sequel, continuing the first album's timeline and taking it up to the 19th Century. Like the first disc, this album focuses on tragic heroines, with Gens using her liquid-toned voice to cut to the emotional core of each character. Beginning in the Baroque era with Rameau and ending in the Romantic with Berlioz, the recital also includes important transitional composers such as Gluck and Cherubini, as well as lesser-known figures such as Piccini, Sacchini, and Arriaga, the "Spanish Mozart", who died at the age of just 19.

CD Reviews

Magic!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Impressive recording!! The duet Gens/Rousset manages to make even better than during their previous colaboration (Tragédiennes vol. 1). Véronique Gens is in full ownership of her capacities and C. Rousset's orchestra never sounded so good, his Berlioz and Cherubini's are amazing!! No doubt one of the year's best disc!!"
Not enough material for a second volume

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Almost 20 minutes of orchestral interludes is too much for a disc of arias (1/3 of the total timing).

-----
