CD Reviews

The voice of several generations
Enrique Torres | San Diegotitlan, Califas | 11/11/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you go back and listen to some of your older discs of Vicente Fernadez, or as he is affectionately known internationally as "Chente," you will notice hardly a difference in his deep, robust delivery. Like an oak aged anejo Tequila, Chentes voice is silky smooth with tremendous qualities not found in the common voice. This disc featues Chente in fine(as usual) voice delivering a super collection of songs. Chente extends his voice to the max, stretching notes to the point where you scratch your head and wonder how he does it. The arangements are beautiful , especially those by Rigoberto Alfaro on such songs as "Mil Problemas" where a soft orchestration serenades while Chente croons his bolero in a voice that is smooth and inviting. Other Rigoberto Alfaro arangements include the super "Puro Michoacan" where the maraichi plays softly as Chente sings the pleasures of this beautiful state in Mexico, the title track "De Un Rancho A Otro," that has that typical ranchera feel, as Chente addresses the joy of living in the country , going from ranch to ranch and loving life, another romantic bolero, "Es Hora De Partir" where the references to love are implored to a distant lover and a song entitled "Sin Papeles" that begins much like a recent hit by his son Alejandro Fernadez , where the Spanish influence is emphasized with a flamenco , hand clapping syncopated beat that extends throughout the song for a different effect from the traditional ranchera mold. All in all this is a good product with twelve songs in the three minute range variety for a nice offering of Chente in a mellow yet dynamic style. This is a CBS packaging from 1992 of older songs from the extensive Chente archive. This is a no frills package with only the bare bones credit for arrangements, direction and composers. This is a short but sweet assortment of songs with a running time of 34:51 for a nice change of pace in your CD rotation. Recommended for fans of one of the idolos (idols) of Mexico and legendary ranchera singers, Vicente Fernandez, or Chente as he is more commonly known."
