CD Reviews

Back before punk went corporate
Cap'n Destructo | Seattle, WA | 05/02/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

""it didn't really get good until 'the end of 96" This is the most patently absurd and solipsistic remark I've ever heard in regards to "punk". Please, Victims Family is unique in their style and generally timeless in their content (a few notable exceptions here and there). I first saw them at a tiny venue in northern Colorado that doubled as a ballet studio, the place was absolutely packed and the show was unparalleled in my experience. I have never seen a band with as much energy and enthusiasm since, this album comes remarkably close to capturing that same energy. If you want to relive (or live for the first time) your favourite Victims Family concert, you can't do better than this. Fortunately for us all, they have regrouped and I hope they will be putting out new material soon. As for the comment, "it didn't really get good until 'the end of 96," you should add, "...the end of 96 when I started paying attention to punk." Your "punk" is a derivative, copy-cat, one-off cr@p in a shrink-wrap compared to how it all started and the spirit it embodied. This album will get you closer to it than any amount of your cheap corporate-punk ever will."
Victim's Family DERIVATIVE? CARBON COPY?

"I saw Victim's Family live in '91 in Petaluma's Phoenix Theater... when they opened for NoMeansNo (and GREEN DAY opened for THEM... quite an incredible show since I love all three bands, but just gives you some HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE). Victim's Family is from my home town, Santa Rosa... and they are also my favorite band of all time. Perhaps it's because of how Ralph screams, or because of how they boldly go where no-one dares with their guitars... how can anyone deny that with the amount of talent they have, they could destroy anyone, yet they CHOOSE to play this very ORIGINAL and NOVEL type of music. They used to tour with Primus all the time... and you know the story of how Claypool (do you know who he is little girl?) almost became the bassist for Metallica... but Metallica just said "That guy's just got his own thing going on..." almost as if to say "No way we'd give up our corporate strategy to have the most talented bassist on earth play for us." Victim's Family is in Primus' league in terms of talent AND originality, but their music is just so much cooler (and less self-indulgent). This live album really capture's their energy... and I'm happy to see that they've reunited. Just realize... Victim's Family don't necessarily strive to make music that is "pleasing" to vapid high school chicks..."
If you like the Victims Family, but this album!

"Live recording in Holland. All their great songs, great as all their others.... and a few more.... If you've ever seen them during a live gig, you know you wanna have this album. If you didn't hear them live before, but know their songs, than follow my advise: buy this album....Unfortunately they quit, came back as Saturn's Flea Collar and are now playing under the name Hellworms."
