Fox once again Plays with Beautiful Tonal Colors
Gregory E. Foster | 09/20/1999

"When hearing the Names Franck, and Dupre one automatically thinks France, but when Fox is at the Organ Playing those pieces full of that rich tonal color of the Chorist Reeds one thinks Heavy Organ with Fox in the days of Riverside."
A MOST NECESSARY recording!

"First, I don't know how, but amazon lost my original review of this disc. My list of tags was still there, but not the review itself, so I will do a replacement one.

This is actually "The BEST of Virgil Fox, Volume 3"! Therefore, it belongs in your collection, along with Volumes 1 & 2!

The entire album is simply awesome (as all Virgil's releases were), and it is without doubt the hardest of all to find. Buy a used copy on here, it is the ONLY way to get one!

Highlights are:

The Durafle Suite Number 5.......very rare! I know of no other recording of it! It is simply beautiful, and sadly neglected. Certainly reason enough to purchase this recording!

The Boellmann Suite Gothique is just wonderful, and, another very good reason for purchasing this set.

And, the Vierne and Dupre pieces are played with such magnificent "Virgilian" splendor...all the fond memories of the Riverside concerts come flooding back from so many years ago. Simply put, (as Fox's fans know) there was never anyone to match him...even Liberace couldn't touch him for outrageousness, and of course the Organ is a much more "splendorous" instrument!

As I said above, do yourself (and your collection) a favor and add a copy of this album to it (even a used one from a secondary dealer on amazon here). You will not be sorry! I wish you many happy hours of listening! ~operabruin"
