"This album is the premiere recording of "The Four Seasons" for brass instruments! This is astonishing, because it is hard to imagine brass players encompassing all of the strings from the original scoring of these concertos.
Everyone is familiar with at least one of the Four Seasons (Op. 8, Nos. 1-4), Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. This is one of the most recognizable pieces of classical (Baroque) music ever written, and through the transcribing for brass quintet by Arthur Frackenpohl, this music truly shines. The Canadian Brass is an amazing group of musicians, all excelling on their respective instruments, and it is evident throughout this recording. There are, however, some spots where it is evident that this music was originally played by strings; such as extremely rapid passages, in which trumpet(s) sound like they are at the maximum capacity as musicians.
It is beatiful how Frackenpohl chose to score the brass quintet, at times, moving the melody from high voice to low, and really giving the tuba a chance to shine! This is a fantastic effort by the Canadian Brass, one of (THE) best Brass Quintet out there, great balance, extreme technical ability, and sensitive musicality throughout!"
