Some Bach lovers stop listening at the end of Book 1 of The Well-Tempered Clavier, as if Book 2 were just more of the same. But each one of these sets of preludes and fugues is a masterpiece, worth a lifetime of study and enjoyment. And the nature of Book 2, written almost two decades later than Book 1, is somewhat different, even richer in musical and emotional texture.
