Widely regarded as the greatest pianist of the twentieth century, by the time he died in 1989 the charismatic Vladimir Horowitz had been a legend for over six decades, his very name a symbol of pianistic virtuosity and excellence. An American of Ukrainian birth, his playing possessed a unique combination of power, ineffable grace and crystalline delicacy. This collection displays the full range of his genius, from his natural affinity with the Russian repertoire of Rachmaninov and Scriabin and the fullblown Romanticism of Chopin and Liszt to the purity of his performances of Scarlatti and Clementi.

A grab-bag that may be appealing to the Horowitz newcomer

"This 2-CD set consists of previously issued material. This who already have Horowitz's recordings will have no need to acquire this, as these items will duplicate their existing collections and nothing has been further remastered. Those unfamiliar with or curious about Horowitz would do well to get this, as it's at midprice, and has an interesting cross section or repertoire which (mostly) displays his enthusiams well. There are no large scale works here, just lollipops and excerpts from larger works. Horowitz was usually at his best in shorter works, which serves this collection well.

The Scarlatti, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Scriabin works can be recommended without reservation. The Chopin and Schumann are close to top-tier, but not quite on the highest level. Of the Mozart and Beethoven items, only the slow movement from the Pathetique Sonata convinces (Horowitz was never a great Beethovenian, and didn't really get the "hang" of Mozart until he was in his 80s).

The items come from his RCA and Columbia years, as well as from his last recording for Sony Classical (which now owns both the RCA Red Seal and Columbia Masterworks catalogues). There is nothing here from the Deutsche Grammophon years, of course, nor the HMV items that are now owned by EMI. But this set gives a good idea of how Horowitz played at most points in his career."
