CD ReviewsThis recording deserves to be heard E. J. Van Sten | 12/28/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "All Ring-cycle recordings have attractive and less attractive attributes. Haitink's cycle was recorded in the studio at roughly the same time as Levine's, and shares with that set James Morris' fantastic and fresh Wotan. Walkure was the first to be recorded, and Haitink is generally a bit less sure-footed than in the later installments, but this is already his show - he and Morris are this set's main strengths. No weak links in the cast: Goldberg and Studer are fine as the twins, and Eva Marton, while far from approaching subtlety, is great when in tune with the drama as in her encounters with Siegmund and Wotan. In the other cycle operas, Haitink would get even better, Marton got worse, but with Jerusalem in very good voice as Siegfried and a generally excellent huge supporting cast, the entire Ring is a success. Recordings are distant but brilliant.
