"I am always tempted to start my review of an older Levine orchestral CD with a mea culpa. For three decades I underestimated him outside the opera pit, a bad mistake. I missed this generous (78 min.) CD of music mostly for strings from 1991. But I had a good deal of company. The "maestro at the Met" label was affixed to Levine, and hard as DG tried, they couldn't get the public to think of him as a great orchestral talent. He was, and is. Nothing can be faulted about this glorious recording, and the Berliners are in top form, which means unsurpassable. The three masterpieces that make up the program need no further words, except to say that Levine has something fresh to say about each of them."
