"Walt Dickerson is a very talented, underrated vibes player. Although he recorded several albums for Fantasy in the early 60s, he never caught on like Milt Jackson did before him, or Bobby Hutcherson did after him (I personally find Hutch to be the more innovative player). "This Is Walt Dickerson" is his debut album, recorded in March of 1961. It features Austin Crowe on piano, Bob Lewis on bass, and an early look at someone who became arguably the most well-known of all these musicians on the drums, Andrew Cyrille. The material on this disc is fairly standard fare with up-tempo "Time" and "Death and Taxes" the album's standouts. All of Dickerson's OJC discs are limited editions so interested parties should act quickly."
