"Most jazz fans know Wanderley from his excellent recordings for Verve in the mid 60's. This recording was made for EMI while he was still in Brazil. He made several recordings for EMI before he was brought to the states and started recording for Verve. This is one of his best ones. Recorded in 1963, unlike his Verve recordings, this involves a band, featuring saxophone, trumpet, guitar and a variety of latin percussion. His style is different from what he would sound in just a short three years for Verve in 1963. This album is far better than his earliest effort for EMI in 1961 on the album "O Samba e Mais Samba". That album hardly features his trademark organ hardly at all. Indeed, it is more of an orchestral latin sound that features more of his sidemen than himself. This album from 1963 is still in that mode, but you can clearly hear that he has much more experience and has balanced himself with his band. There are some wonderful arrangements on this cd. This cd has the original version of "A Different Beat". He would remake this tune with Luis Enrique. This can be found on the Talkin Verve album. This one has no vocal and swings nicely. This also has his original version of "The Girl From Ipanema". Soncially, this cd has outstanding remastering. Barely any tape hiss, full presence and excellent stereo seperation. Practically audiophile quality. So if you like Walter Wanderley, you owe it to yourself to listen to his early work. You'll enjoy the man even more after hearing this."
