Synopsis

Album Description
The original "For Pence & Spicy Ale" introduced, on record, the 'new' Watersons of the 1970s; two music papers judged it Folk Album of the Year. To the superb original collection have been added several solo tracks by Mike and duets by Lal and Norma, from their own albums of the same period. Between the jubilant opening song "Country Life" and the closing hymn "The Good Old Way" are some of the most stirring performances ever committed to record.

CD Reviews

Raw, earthy, unaccompanied English folk singing
A. J. Watson | Newcastle-on-Tyne, UK | 11/14/1998
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I first heard this album on vinyl many years ago, and it instantly captivated me. The depth and range of voices is amazing - as is the range of songs. 'Country Life' contrasts the powerful vocal chorus of the whole family with a thin, almost wavering male voice - but boy, do the hairs on the back of your neck stand up! That song and several others have haunted me for years - I'm only too glad to be able to hear the full album once more. This is English Country folk at its peak - do your ears a favour!"
The Best of British Folk Acapella
Gary D. Martin | Somerset, MA | 07/11/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you're a fan of Blues,Rags, and Hollers, Steeleye Span, Pentangle, the Carter Family, the Young Tradition, the Anonymous Four or just brilliant acapella music, do your ears and soul a favor and buy this album. Had it been an LP I'd have worn it out by now. A must for lovers of pure British folk music. Trust me on this one."
