Synopsis

It's often hard to make yourself heard in the overcrowded electronica scene, but damned if Italy's Wave Workers Foundation don't make a go of it. This energetic debut is a head-nodding groovefest aimed squarely and unapologetically at the dance floor, but that's not to say it isn't thoughfully put together. Paolo Favoti (of the '80s industrial outfit Pankow) and his cohorts cobble together an amazing sonic structure of both sampled and real instruments, infusing the mix with addictively funky rhythms. Check out the squelchy stomp in "Earmark Tattoo," which is complemented by its take-no-prisoners bass line and fat synth sounds. "Iceage" adds a Middle Eastern flair to an otherwise rather noisy and experimental track, and "Now" even features jazzlike trumpet interludes. WWF prove that you don't have to wrestle with intelligent dance music to make it both fun and interesting. --Steve Landau

CD Reviews

Techy groove worth hearing...

(3 out of 5 stars)

"I stumbled on Wave Workers Foundation on MP3.com back in the day, and was surprised and pleased by the two tracks one could download there: Bellows Grin, and In the Whirlpool. These remain the best tracks on the album- polished, rich and driving. But the album version of of Bellows Grin is missing the vocals that were on the MP3.com track... It's odd for a fan of instrumentals like myself to make such a complaint, but WWF does a great job of weaving rich, bassy vocals into their rich bassy tracks (as In the Whirlpool demonstrates). The rest of the album is interesting stuff, but if you don't get a chance to listen to it before buying, try to get a used copy until there aren't any available. Let's hope WWF continues to develop and release new material though!"
