Album DescriptionWAXWING?s latest endeavour is a series of snapshots from their past. Intervention: Collection + Remix is comprised of previously released WAXWING gems, unreleased live tracks, covers and a lone remix. The five previously released songs, taken from vinyl and compilation appearances, showcase Waxwing at their most propulsive and dynamic. While still as introspective and musically vivid as WAXWING?s current work, drawing from the folk, Americana, indie and rock cannons, tracks such as "Kill The Messenger," the frantic and bombastic "Manicotti" and the languid, melancholic, then all out "Charmageddon" show just how explosive WAXWING can be. In contrast, "Intervention" and "Laboratory" are elegantly restrained soundscapes that build to heavier dynamics while retaining their beauty and contemplative nature, as always accompanied by ROCKY VOTOLATO?s strained, weary vocals that occasionally crack yet never falter. The live tracks, "All Of My Prophets," the U2 cover "New! Years Day," and "Laboratory," are all remarkable, coming across as more urgent, desperate and energetic in their translation. In contrast, the "Spanish Remix," by LOGIC PROBE, is an electronic sprawl, punctuated by atmospheric keyboard washes, intrusive electronic drums and a scrap of Rocky?s vocals, that sounds as far removed from WAXWING as possible. An unlisted and reckless live version of Prince?s "When Doves Cry" fittingly ends Intervention?, WAXWING?s most eclectic yet, contradictorily, unabashed rock release to date.
