Synopsis

Having been tossed off their major labels, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings have bounced back on the tiny Justice label to make some of the best music of their careers. That's certainly true of Jennings' Right for the Time. He still possesses one of the deepest, richest baritones in country music, which brings a West Texas authenticity to this batch of songs about the battle between high hopes and bad habits. On a lovely ballad about his wife, for example, he calls her "The Most Sensible Thing" he's ever done and contrasts her to the many less-than-sensible things he's tried. Right for the Time is not without its flaws. At its best, though, the album manages to combine the cantankerous and the romantic into something as complicated as real life. --Geoffrey Himes

"This CD is maybe Waylon's best. Yeah, I know that's talkin big. But here is the man we have known for 40 years singing like only a 40 year veteran of the fast paced star today nobody tomorrow can. Not to say Jennings is or ever was a nobody, but somewhere along the way, and in the day of "young country", he was forgotten about. But now he is back. A little older, a little wiser, and more sensitive and exposed then ever. Waylon has always had this way with his deep masculine yet vulnerable voice of sounding like he could kick your rear all the way to Littlefeild Texas or he could break down in tears watching Bambi for the teenth time. With the sentimentality that age seems to bestow Waylon sounds all the better, clearer, and content, finally. BUY THIS CD."

"I am writing this just having found out about the passing of Waylon Jennings. This was the first album by him that really grabbed me, and it has wound up being one of my favorite albums by anyone, period. I cannot urge you strongly enough to purchase this cd and listen to it, and I can only expect that it will touch you just the same as it did me. It's that good. The first song (WBPT) grows like a slow moving vine. It's got a groove to it that just coils up around you and won't let go. It builds up anticipation as Waylon sings his "nonsense" lyrics, (about what I don't know,) but that's the charm in it. I guess Waylon figures if he can get you with a song about nothing, then he's got you for the rest of the album. And what a rest of an album. He covers Paul Simon's "The Boxer" with aching sincerity, and duets with wife Jessi on one of the most affecting harmonies in "Deep In The West." His love song to Jessi, "The Most Sensible Thing," has a great message to people who need a reality check about what's important in life and their relationship.Another thing that marks this album for me is Waylon's incredible harmonies. Has anyone given him proper credit for being such an emotive singer, and layering his own harmonies over his vocals so perfectly? This album might be evidence that he is one of the best there is. Compare his version of "The Boxer" to Simon + Garfunkel's and you can see what a feat he pulls off! Folks, I could go on and on about this great record. But I would be babbling I am sure, as I write this in great distress over his death. I just wanted to do something in some small way to let out some emotions. Perhaps I should have waited for awhile, but oh well...just trust me- if you haven't heard this cd, give it a shot.Waylon, I will miss you dearly. Thanks so much for this fantastic album. You have made several other wonderful albums, but this one is my all-time favorite, and I am so glad you gave it to us."
