Pure Folk, beauty and pain

"This is my favorite folk music collection because the vocals are beautiful, the songs are varied and the selections show the amazing emotional depth of the Weavers. Included on the album are covers of classic folk songs (for example, "This Land Is Your Land") as well as several originals. Pete Seeger, the most famous member of the Weavers, contributes "Empty Pocket Blues" and "Greenland Whale Fisheries". The songs "Aunt Rhodie", "Wild Goose Grasses", and "Gotta Travel On" all feature wonderful four part vocals and very effectively convey the emotions of human suffering, loss, and hardships while also reminding the listener of the delicate beauty of life. Instead of allowing their gorgeous vocals to dominate their music, they let the lyrics speak for themselves. Compare this music to that of Peter, Paul and Mary and you will find the depth and honesty of the Weavers makes them the far more important group. The Vanguard record label is one which I would reccomend for anyone who wants to hear honest folk music recorded at a time when music was still insightful and meaningful rather than spiteful and commercial."
