Synopsis

Album Description
First official reissue of The Weeds (a.k.a. The Lollipop Shoppe), authorized by Fred Cole of Dead Moon fame! Life for a young band on the road & on the way up is a merry chaos. When "You Must Be a Witch" proved to be a hit single, The Weeds were hot. The group regularly opened for The Doors, The Seeds, and Moby Grape as well as a few one-offs with the likes of Buffalo Springfield, Janis Joplin, and Jefferson Airplane. This is `60s garage/psychedelia as its best. A long-awaited re-issue, the album has been beautifully re-mastered by Mark "Bosshoss" Taylor. Limited edition LP on 180-gram audiophile vinyl.

CD Reviews

A must have for mid- 1960's psych/garage fans
Joel W. Barnett | Portland, OR United States | 09/01/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I haven't bought this CD yet, but I will. My review is based on having owned the original vinyl issues which comprise this reissue, with one caveat noted below.

Tracks 1 and 2 are from The Weeds 45 of 1966. This record is very rare, I got a cassette recording of it from the singer, Fred Cole, twenty some years ago. It is a great double sider, in the mode of the Kinks and Yardbirds. The A side is an original, the B side is the Them song, done like the Yardbirds.

If you have all the other tracks on this CD, but not these two, you should buy this record, it is worth it. This is a double sided killer.

Tracks 3 to 14 are from their 1968 Uni Records LP. Having moved to Los Angeles, with a stop over in Portland, OR, The Weeds hit the big time in LA and for management reasons changed their name to "The Lollipop Shoppe".

The LP was "Just Colour", and is very much in the style of their LA contemporaries, Love, The Seeds, The Leaves, and The Doors, etc. All the songs are originals. "You Must Be a Witch" and "Don't Look Back" are classics of the style.

I won't do a song by song review of this LP, but will say there are other good songs, and a few forgetable ones. I will say that about 25 years ago I spent a lot of time tracking down a copy, and spent good money to get it. It was money well spent.

Tracks 15 & 16 are from the sound track of the American International biker movie, "Angels From Hell", both are good songs, very similar to their Uni LP.

Tracks 17 & 18 are from a 45 from about 1969, on the NWI label, if my memory serves. This was after the original band had split up, and was done in Portland, OR by Fred Cole and a couple of the other members of the band. The style is different, with a heavier hard rock style, as I recollect.

I highly recommend this CD to you and I also recommend that you check out Dead Moon, Fred Coles's current band, (as far as I know, I don't follow these things much any more).

Joel"
