Gondwanaland were the first musicians to realize the potential of didjeridu in contemporary music, and prefigured world music in Australia by a decade. Formed as the Gondwanaland Project in 1981 by Charlie McMahon peter Carolan, the group recorded and toured until 1992, when didjeridu playing started to be taken up widely outside its traditional home of Arnhem Land in the far north of the continent.
