"Jazz guitarist Steve Khan once said that he preferred the guitar tone of Wes in his later Riverside recordings. This compilation of Wes' earlier recordings with Mel Rhyne would probably prove Steve Khan wrong. Jazz guitar purists would find Wes at his purest best in every cut: Round Midnight, Freddie the Freeloader, Moanin', Besame Mucho, etc. Most of these cuts are some of Wes' early, early works before he turned commercial to survive. The recordings are raw, and you can almost feel this young lion in the early sixties eager to share his gift with the jazz world. A gem that should be in every serious jazz guitar affincionado's collection."
