CD ReviewsPleasing, unique and very original! uthungus | San Francisco, CA | 02/15/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "My vote for one of the best things about this compilation was to NOT "tease" collectors/fans and feature one or two tracks from some of the girls here and then list other hits or tunes they might have done in the liner notes that AREN'T ON THE COLLECTION TO HEAR! For the most part, what you see here is actually what you get! Lots of A/B sides of 45s and just enough info on each cut; plus a little more about some ot the singers themselves! Granted, the last few tracks don't feature the "flip", but overall there is enough to satisfy your sampling needs.
From the funny to the elegant to the "heartfelt efforts" this collection gives you a great sampling of some really unique singers and tunes! Funny tunes include "Tom-Tom" by Terry & the Tunisians. A decade or two later maybe Annabella Lwin and her Bow Wow Wow gang might have sped this one up and added some wailing just for fun! It goes to show how songwriters will try many obscure paths to create some clever lyrics and "Jigsaw Puzzle" - (The Chelmars) - is one of those! "...Your love is like a jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure it out...!" A classic! It's hard to figure out if it's really a girl doing the speaking parts over "Too Nice Tonight" (The Kittens), because it sounds an awful lot like the late great Flip Wilson's "Geraldine" adding some sass! "I Wanna Talk to You" (Karol Kelly) is just borderline off-key and a little warped for novelty value. If you've ever gotten the chance to hear Nancy Sinatra ("pre-cool" as I called her) on the "Tonight You Belong to Me" CD, this might have been a good vehicle for her back then! Elegant pieces blended in here nicely include "Guess Who I'm Fooling" and "The Soul of my Man" (both Pat Jarvis). I know I've heard a very popular modern tune that emulated that rhythmic piano "plinking" in the past few years as in Jarvis's first featured effort! "Love Can Make You Know" by "Shirley Elliston", aka Shirley "Name Game" Ellis shows so much more to come for her career-wise and this is a beautiful start! Other nice contributions include "I Think I'm Gonna Fall in Love With You" (The Twilights); "Take the Bitter With the Sweet" (Little Gigi); "Larry" (The Allen Sisters) and "Confess" (Chelmars). Whimsical include "Love Wheel" (Millie Foster) with its back-ups sounding like eight-year-olds! "The Street" (Terry & the Tunisians) - although there was a technicality in that one..."...the street we used to walk together...it's gone...they tore it down last week..." As opposed to tearing it UP! Finally this is rounded out with chirpy Marcie Blaine doing the title track "What Does a Girl Do?" (English version)! Overall this is really one of the better samplers I've come across in my collecting searches! Please keep them coming, whomever wants to take the loving time to re-release them! I'll keep snapping them up! " |
