CD Reviews

Where did they go? I have the answer.

"The Whirling Dervishes were an alt-rock band from Westfield, NJ, that was big locally through the late 80s-early 90s. Some of the members have been replaced and the group is now known as Everlounge, a kitschy lounge-pop band that plays live once or twice a month at a variety of central Jersey local watering holes. Although they aren't technically the Dervishes anymore, you can usually count on them to pull out "You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch" around the holidays during their live shows. The Dervishes' other available CD is the full-length "Strange & Wonderful," which was one of my FAVORITE CDs of the 90s. I highly recommend you buy it; it's on Amazon. And check out www.everlounge.com if you're interested in the band's current incarnation."
Where did they go?

"These days, you're lucky if you get to hear the Whirling Dervishes version of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" on the radio. An amusing romp, their cover does the original proud, just with a straight '90s rock sound.

If that were the only track on this EP, it would still be worth tracking down a copy.

But you're lucky, and you get more tunes on this CD. Other gems include "Chill"; a tale of a relationship gone sour set to a dance beat. "Winter Kills" sounds like it could be lifted off of any alternative pop album of 2003 & 2004. Wonderful orchestration on a slower tune; crank it in your car or put on the headphones to hear all the little intricacies. "Sinnin' and Skatin'" hints of darker tunes by 'The Cure' or slower songs by 'Metallica'.

The entire EP is beautifully produced. For an indy band on an indy label, the producer, Alan Douches, masterfully kept the effects at a light touch, but got rid of a lot of the 'grit' that we're all used to in our independent rock. If you like your music just a bit left of center and can track down anything by these guys, get it."
