Synopsis

Album Description
2010 album from the Los Angeles-based Heavy Metal quintet. Tired of the same old down-tuned screamo Metal that seems to be everywhere these days, Jon Leon formed White Wizzard in the summer of 2007. The goal was simple - to bring the songwriting, melody and good times back into Metal and Rock. With a screaming demon on vocals, a tight two guitar attack that can shred AND play with feel, thunderous melodic bass and drums, White Wizzard is poised to take the torch of the great Metal bands of the past and look to the future with a dominating spirit and memorable melodic hooks and songwriting.

Metallic overload!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you're a fan of traditional heavy metal (think 1985, just before thrash and hair metal took over), this is a great time to be alive. We're in the middle of what UK mag Metal Hammer has dubbed the New Wave of Traditional Metal (NWOTM) and one of the more exciting bands to emerge from the NWOTM is California's White Wizzard.

White Wizzard released an EP last year (the excellent High Speed GTO), and subsequently lost every member except for bassist Jon Leon. Leon put together a new lineup, battle-tested them on the road opening for Korpiklaani, and put together a full-length album - Over the Top.

Over the Top is essentially 9 songs of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest worship, which is why it rules. There's a fierce (yet melodic) twin-guitar attack, very prominent Steve Harris-style bass, soaring dramatic vocals, and all the songs are about rocking in the night and battling for metal. The lyrics are beyond cheesy at times, but that only adds to their appeal. There's just a great NWOBHM meets Metal Massacre vibe to these songs that makes me like the album more each time I spin it.

If you're a fan of traditional heavy metal, it doesn't get much better than this. Between Over the Top, Icarus Witch's new album Draw Down the Moon and oh yeah a new Iron Maiden album, 2010 should be a banner year for traditional metal.

PS - I saw White Wizzard live earlier this year, and they put on a high-energy show. If you get a chance, check them out.

PPS - I know the split with the original members - who went on to form Holy Grail - wasn't exactly friendly, but the end result is two great metal bands. If you like White Wizzard, you'll want to check out Holy Grail's Improper Burial EP."
