Synopsis
Album Description The great Wild Bill Davis was, like Jimmy Smith, who cited him as a primary influence, both an innovator and a popularizer of that specific double keyboard tradition. One of the very first to play the organ as the instrument it is and not like a piano which most practitioners did before him, Davis was the first to establish the classic organ trio format with guitar and drums eventually adding a tenor sax later on occasionally. In the words of one of his peers, organ grinder Bill Doggett "We were all impressed by what Davis was doing. It was a whole new idea. People were shouting and stomping. They never heard anything like it before."This long overdue collection exhibits what a master of dynamics he was with diminuendos that climb downward to a whisper followed by crescendos that swoop up to a scream which will take the top of your head off. He truly was an innovator when it came to utilizing the full potential of the console in an orchestral manner. Fate has not been too kind to him when it comes to reissues of his discography but with this representative collection of his Everest output it may be safe to say Wild Bill Davis Rides Again or in his own words "One More Time!" CD ReviewsLong out of print recordings available at last! Southern Slim | Memphis, USA | 08/01/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "Why is it that there are hundreds of Jimmy Smith comps and very little released from his mentor, the great Wild Bill Davis? Wild Bill was the innovator when it came to utilizing the full potential of the organ in an orchestral manner. This incredible overview of his output for the Everest label (he recorded 5 albums for the label) should have fans of organ jazz popping the corks on their champagne bottles. Why?, well these recordings have been out of print for almost 45 years!! It's all here, a healthy 5 selections from all 5 albums for a total of 25 glorious tracks. Most of the tracks feature Grady Tate and Bill Jennings, there's some really rare stuff with the great trumpeter Charlie Shavers and helping Bill out on tracks from "Swings My Fair Lady" are Milt Hinton and Jo Jones. On the tracks with Grady Tate on drums and Bill Jennings on guitar, the great tenor man George Clark simply smokes. All in all this is one funky ride that should not be missed by any fan of organ jazz. 5 stars all around. Complete info on the sessions are included along with liner notes by the very informed Larry Hollis from Cadence magazine. If you're missing this one, you're missing alot."
