Album Description William Pint was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, then headed west to Seattle to pursue music and avoid cold winters. Felicia Dale was born and raised on an island in Washington's Puget Sound; her father was a sea captain who brought back tales and treasures from exotic ports of call. Together, they make nautical music fun, dynamic and varied -- and above all, musical. Backing themselves with guitar, hurdy-gurdy (an ancient wheel-driven instrument that sounds like a cross between a bagpipe and a violin), tinwhistle, octave mandolin, doumbek, etc., they have a wide open sense of rhythmic possibilities. Hearts of Gold explores the myth of the sea, the struggle with the elements casting an image of human nature in all its facets -- from the plaintive "Bay of Biscay" to Micki Perry's hilarious "Wreck of the Lady Washington"; from the treacherous tale of "Wreckers" to the warm poetry of "Companioned by the Sea," a Marjorie Howell lyric set to music by Bob Zentz. They were playing their home-cut guitar (William) and Hurdy-Gurdy (Felicia). We stopped and listened for a while. They are very accomplished musicians. Then we talked for a while. They are very nice people. We bought "Hearts of Gold" and it is a splendid CD. Our four year loves and sings along mightily to the Pump Shanty which is a shanty sung at the pace of bilge-pumping. The title track, is a light snipe at landlubbers. Felicia sings beautifully, mostly in support of William, but in her fluent French on one track. Probably the most outstanding track is the last. The Atholl Highlanders is a well known (bag) piping tune, that Felica plays on Hurdy Gurdy. Her phrasing is terrific, and I defy the casual listener to tell the difference between this instrument and the pipes on this song.If you like traditional and traditional style sailing songs, played by accomplished musicians, truly excellent guitar with unusual but very compatible arrangements using an unusual instrument--buy it.Hey, if you just like good folk music--buy it." There is no real way to describe this wild looking instrument. It's like a set of bag pipes are squeezed into this wooden box! I have had the pleasure of hearing William and Felicia live on several occasions, and they sound as good live as on this album, which is saying a lot!"
