[From the insert] "Mozart generally did not compose an aria until he had heard the singer for whom it was intended: they were tailor made for specific voices. Similarly, when he composed the Andante of a piano sonata for Rosa Cannabich, daughter of the Mannheim Kapellmeister, he not only kept in mind her technical and musical accomplishments but also, as he wrote to his father, made it "fit closely [her] character". As most of Mozart's piano concertos were written for his own use, they were no doubt similarly tailored to his notion of himself as a musician. Thus knowledge of the works sheds light on the performer, and vice versa."
