CD Reviews

Pricey but precious
Charlotte Ann Hu | Arizona, USA | 03/13/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a wonderful set for anyone who would like to be educated in music history, but never had time for it and doesn't want to spend thousands of dollars university classes on the topic.

This audio set is designed as a audio book as each segment begins with few minutes of the music of the artist that segment is dedicated to. This kind of audio experience would never be possible with a traditional ink and paper book. Each segment then goes on to explain clearly and in simple terms why this particular artist was important to the history of music and culture. The set uses such remarkably simple memory techniques as "You can remember that Vivaldi is the master if Violin because both his name and violin start with a V." It goes over the various time periods repeatedly with the obvious intention of helping the listener remember them, but not so repetatively as to be boring or rote in nature.

While it may be a remarkably simple set, I've been discussing it with a colleague has has a jurid doctorate and grew up in a family of musicians, including an uncle whose career has been playing violin in a large city's orchestra. Although my highly educated colleague was weened on Mozart, he had never heard of Palestrina, "The Prince of Music," nor did he know that Bach had 20 children.

This set includes legends, which I love. Historians have criticized many of the modern DVD historical sets for including legends in the commentary of history and history's greatest people. A legend isn't historically accurate. While it might not be historically proven, legends are those details of history that make it spicy and enticing.

Legend has it, for example, that Vivaldi lived in a ménage à trois relationship with two sisters. This set clarifies all the facts ... that Vivaldi rebutted the accusations and claimed himself and the sister innocent of any immorality. The legend, nonetheless lives on.

This set allows me to become personally acquainted with the greatest artists and to come to appreciate them more fully. It has enriched my life."
