"Quantz was known as Europe's best flautist. It shows in his concertos, which, beside the flute virtuosity, are interesting musically as well. Galway plays robustly and passionately and does the jubilant tone of the music full justice. This is music played by a contemporary orchestra on modern instruments. Compared to other recordings of Quantz' concertos, particularly Rachel Brown's anemic attempts, the Galway recording is highly recommended."

"I had never heard of Quantz until I caught his flute concerto in G on the radio. I don't usually get excited about flute concerti, but the pizzicato always does me in, and this piece has a nice passage."

"I don't know quite how to put this. I heard the C Major concerto on the radio this morning and had trouble believing that Sir James had done this. There is absolutely no reason to play a baroque concerto that fast. Yes, it showed Galway's fabulous technique, but everybody knows he has that. What he did do was totally wreck the music. Any good piece from that era, and this is one, will get driven along by the rhythmic and harmonic intensity; tremendous speed only ruins that aspect of the piece. I have heard Galway do many other pieces where he chose to use proper tempos, and can't fathom why he did this."
