The music of Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829) has great appeal for guitarists, and practically nobody else. It is lightweight almost to the vanishing point, and I've seldom heard a piece of his that stuck in my mind. But he did write plenty of music for the guitar, providing the instrument with some classical period repertoire. (His contemporary Sor wrote much better music, but he was only one composer.) The Serenade is the most interesting piece here, while the Duo Concertante goes on a lot longer than its material justifies. Fine performances by all, but this is still a disc for very specialized tastes. --Leslie Gerber

"While Giuliani has been criticized for being a slight composer, he did right fun, relaxing and invigorating music. Ok, it isn't quite the caliber of someone like Mozart or Beethoven, but there is a refined elegance and a nice tunefulness which really comes through with the virtuosity of the performers, besides, not everyone can be a Mozart... The melodies are familiar and hearing that makes one feel good. Overall, the sound and the Musicianship are really worth it."

Very pleasant, very Italian

"The only point I agree with Amazon's reviewer is that the serenade is the best piece on this CD. No, I am not a guitarist, but Giuliani's music is appealing to me, unlike music of nail-biting late Romantics, brain-drilling Shostakovich, boring-like-watching-golf Hindemith and most of other XX Century composers who get all the worship of critics. I also disagree that Sor wrote better music; he was more productive, than Giuliani, but also a very uneven composer, who wrote, along with some masterpieces, tons of quite unremarkable stuff. And if Giuliani's music was (quote) lightweight on the point of vanishing, it could not had survived almost 2 centuries. As I have heard, he originally wrote the Serenade for flute, guitar and cello. If that is true, it is somewhat surprising that James Gallway yielded this piece to a violin (or, if I am wrong, why did not he transcribe it for flute, like he transcribes almost everything else?). I did not give 5 stars because I do not appreciate track duplications (the first track, this is one third of this CD, first appeared on Italian Serenade CD in this same recording). Overall, nice music full of pleasant melodies in a typical Italian style."
