CD Reviews

Cole Porter as he would like to be heard

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This beautifully presented boxed set has a big, well illustrated book on heavy stock, with meticulous and well researched notes about both Porter and those who interpreted his music and lyrics. The book shows not just chronology of Porter's output, but also has thumbnail biographies of those artists appearing on the CDs.Having said that, any Cole Porter anthology should be more about the music than anything else, and for the Porter lover there is a host of recordings of his famous (and some not so famous) songs. Reproductions are excellent, especially of a couple of the older versions, and some of the songs are live recordings from the Broadway shows they first appeared in. For the purist, a few of the songs are done in a couple of versions by different artists, so that you might hear a 'straight' version and a 'jazz' version of the same song. Good value."
