Synopsis

Product Description
In the early '90s, the all-female indie rock trio ZuZu's Petals were a unique presence in the Minneapolis music scene, infusing some heartland goddess energy into the local land o' lakes soundscape. Rhino Handmade salutes their short but wonderful life-span with this, the first-ever compilation of their output. It plucks favorites from the group's two albums on Twin/Tone-a label home to other Twin Cities icons including The Replacements, Soul Asylum and The Jayhawks-as well as assorted singles and rarities. The 20-track disc also features one previously unreleased cut, 'Poor Little Rich Girl,'recorded in 1991

CD Reviews

You're probably asking yourself, "who?"

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Nope, I hadn't ever heard of 'em either, even though I liked a lot of Twin\Tone and Amphetamine Reptile bands that were around at the same time as Zuzu's Petals.

All you need to know is that this band rocked out big time. They have a gigantic, roaring early 90's indie rawk sound that's less punky than riot grrrl but glossier than grunge.

This compilation has a good selection of singles, one-off tracks, and album cuts which span the band's short life. The early stuff sounds a lot like Babes in Toyland--the band didn't really hit its stride until it recorded its first album. Then everything came together: clean production, loud guitars, and great songs.

As usual, Rhino Handmade has put a lot of care into remastering and selecting tracks. The disc sounds great and flows well. Collectors will especially appreciate the Husker Du, Guess Who, and Melanie covers (Standing by the Sea, Star Baby, and Brand New Key respectively).

Bottom line: if you like late 80's-early 90's indie rock, this album is worth picking up. One star off because the liner notes aren't very good."
